Islands To Get Comedy Tour In June

The islands are getting their very own comedy festival this June.

‘Scilly Laughs’ will feature four top-notch comedians, each bringing their own unique form of entertainment.

It’s been organised by Brighton-based professional comedian Julie Jepson, who worked at St Martin’s on the Isle Hotel before beginning a career in comedy.

She’s a regular visitor to Scilly and says the event is an ideal opportunity to combine work with a trip to her favourite place.

And Julie says she’s very aware of the comedy value in the islands’ name.

She says when she tells audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that she’s going to the Scillies to recuperate, everyone thinks it’s fantastic!

Julie says there’s obviously an appetite for comedy on the islands, after hearing about the success of last year’s performance by Russell Kane and the Kernow King, which was a sell-out.

And she says this has been one of the easiest gigs she’s ever arranged. Every comedian she’s spoke to has said Scilly is one of the places they’ve always wanted to visit.

As well as compere Julie, this June’s event will feature Suzy Bennett, a Westcountry comedian from Plymouth. Julie says she’s “a Dawn French-type character” and can be “a bit rude,” hence the minimum age of 16 at the concert.

There’ll also be Phil Lucas who uses visual-based comedy. Julie says he’s very original and she guarantees that you’ll have never seen anything like his act.

Julie says she’s keen to incorporate some of her observations on the islands into her routine.

But she says she’s a nervous about performing in Scilly, partly because she loves the place and wants to come back and partly because everyone will know where she’s staying if they don’t like her jokes!

She’s already booked the venues and is currently looking for a sponsor before tickets go on sale.

The tour will start on St Mary’s in the Old Town Inn on June 13th, moving to Tresco’s New Inn, a free event, on the 14th and finishing at Adam’s Fish and Chips on St Martin’s on the 15th.

A raffle in aid of Cornwall Air Ambulance will be held at each venue.

Julie says she hoping the tour can become an annual fixture on the islands.
