St Mary’s residents are being encouraged to see in 2015 in a public celebration that doesn’t require going to the pubs.

The Methodist Church is hosting a Grand Buffet from 9.30pm on New Year’s Eve.

The Reverend Charlie Gibbs says around fifteen people attended last year but many locals come and go during the evening.

There’s plenty of food and fun in an alcohol-free environment, he says.

Charlie says he wanted to do something special for people who are looking for an alternative to the pub.

The idea has been formed from the old Methodist tradition of ‘Watch Night’ services that used to see in the New Year but died out in the 60’s. Charlie says many older people in Scilly say they remember the events.

Charlie says there’ll be some hymns and a round of Auld Lang Syne at midnight.

He thinks it’s important for people with faith to mark the start of the New Year appropriately, especially with the degree of uncertainty currently seen in the world.
