Santas Turn Out In Force For First Scilly Christmas Fun Run

santa fun run 2014The rain yesterday morning didn’t put people off from dressing up as Father Christmas and running or walking around St Mary’s.

116 locals took part in the first ever Santa Run, in aid of the Children’s Hospice Southwest.

Some people walked the 3.5km circuit with dogs dressed as reindeer or elves, and everybody who took part paid £2.50, which will go towards the charity.

Wez Swain, who came up with the idea, says it’s become a popular way to raise money on the mainland and he wanted to give it a try on Scilly.

He says he’s surprised that there are so many Father Christmas suits in the islands, and there were some interesting alternative outfits including runners dressed as bananas, angels and Elvis.

During his speech to entrants before the race, Wes asked everybody to wave at Park House as they filed past to help make the residents feel included. He says he wanted the opportunity for everyone in the community to take part in the festivities.

The first islander to complete the circuit was Olly Glenn in16 minutes. The first woman home was Helen Pearce and the first junior woman was Tara Hitchens.

Wez says he will undoubtedly arrange another event in 2015.
