‘Good Family Fun’ Promised For This Year’s Panto

theatre town hallThe St Mary’s Theatre Club will have their first panto rehearsal with the set in place this weekend. And the director says this year’s stage dressing is “spectacular.”

Maggie Perkovic is pleased with the progress and says they are ahead of where they usually are, with over a month before the opening.

Kevin Leeman is playing the dame, Widow Twankey, in ‘Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.’

The play has been bought in, rather than written locally as in the last two year, and Maggie says they’ve had to change some of the 1930s written text to avoid confusion. Some of the wording, although completely innocent for its time, did seem “a bit suggestive” nowadays, she said.

There are fewer children in the cast this year and Maggie says she was concerned that they don’t have suitable back stage facilities in which youngsters can relax as they wait to go on stage.

But she’s hopeful that young dancers from Lesley Thomas’ dancing school will join the production, accompanied by Chris Garratt’s band.

Maggie says this year’s panto is straightforward and easy to understand, and she’s promising clean, family fun.

“There’s no breaking wind on stage and certainly no swearing!” she says.

The dress rehearsal, traditionally the event where off-islanders can see the show, will be on the afternoon of 25th January and the main performances will be on the 30th and 31st January, and 1st February.
