Another Record Cruise Ship Season On The Cards For Scilly

minerva cruise ship and harbour2015 looks like it will be another record-breaking year for cruise ship visits to Scilly. And we’ll be visited by the largest vessel to come here to date.

Numbers have been rising each year – in 2014, the islands received 39 ship visits.

This means St Mary’s is now, by a long margin, the number one cruise ship destination in the South West. Falmouth received around 25 cruise ships last year.

St Mary’s Harbourmaster Dale Clark says we’re going into the New Year with the largest number of bookings and he thinks that around 45 ships could visit next season.

And at over 42,000 tonnes and with 1,200 people on board, the CMV Magellan will be the largest cruise ship to visit Scilly. It’ll be here twice – in June and July – and will dwarf this year’s largest arrival, which had 850 passengers on board.

Dale says the harbour staff are keen to work with the Islands’ Partnership to make sure visiting passengers have plenty of information on things to do here.

Last season, IP staff boarded the boats to outline options for shore excursions and Dale says they’ve met this week to see how they can ‘up their game’ and make the visitor experience even better in the future.
