Late Night Shopping Event To Showcase Scilly’s Traders

christmas lights 2012Scilly’s longest-established band and fire juggling will provide the entertainment during the first-ever Christmas event organised by Islands’ Partnership on the 23rd December.

A late night shopping evening had been arranged to showcase what is on offer from local retailers. But it has since grown into a bigger street party for islanders and visitors.

Partnership Director and Tanglewood Kitchen owner Euan Rodger says it’s about creating a buzz for visitors and something that celebrates the best local services.

The IP are also keen to rebuild the tourist economy around the Christmas period, which Euan says has been sadly lacking over the last few years.

Tresco, the Star Castle and local pubs are all busy at this time of year, he says, and they want to bring that to the high street.

The IP has secured a road closure of Hugh Street from The Parade to the Bank between 4.30pm and 8pm, so people can move around more freely.

Members of the Scilly Sirens choir will be singing at 5pm and the Steamband will perform to last-minute shoppers from 6.45pm. Terry Ward from the Steamband says they’re sure to be playing some Christmas songs for the event.

The temporary traffic restrictions mean that street traders can sell their wares in the street at no charge. And the Partnership wants to encourage any off-island or upcountry stallholders to get in touch if they’d like a space reserved.

Islanders who need eleventh hour inspiration for Christmas cuisine will be offered tips in preparing festive fish dishes and Salakee Farm duck by Euan.

Euan says he won’t be fazed by working in front of a crowd, having done similar demonstrations during the last few Walk Scilly events.

Becky Lock will also decorate biscuits, Jenny Burrows is set to offer tips on festive floral displays and there’ll be a gift-wrapping masterclass and a quiz for children.

The events will unfold as follows:

5pm – Members of Scilly Sirens singing favourite carols and Christmas tunes outside the Kavorna.

5.30pm – Children’s shortbread decorating with Becky Lock.

5.45pm – Cookery demo at Tanglewood Kitchen. Watch Euan prepare a festive fish dish.

6pm – Christmas flower arranging. Jenny Burrows and friends work their magic with flowers and festive greenery at the Atlantic.

6.15pm – Fire Juggling at The Bank.

6.30pm – Gift-wrapping demonstration.

6.45pm – Live music with the Steamband until 7.30pm

7pm – A second cookery demo with Euan, this time using Salakee Farm Duck.
