Search For Volunteer Hospital Befrienders Being Stepped Down

hospital 4A recruitment drive for volunteer befrienders to keep St Mary’s Hospital patients company is being stepped down.

In June last year Volunteer Cornwall launched an appeal for helpers to provide for “the spiritual needs of patients” during ward visits.

The move followed a decision by Peninsula Community Health, which runs the hospital, to stop funding hospital chaplains.

But Volunteer Coordinator Jenny Wilkins says they only had one applicant and that person had to pull out because of other commitments.

And while the project is going “from strength to strength” over in Cornwall, that hasn’t happened here yet.

Jenny says the organisation will be looking at areas where they need to increase volunteer involvement in 2015 and she hopes that will include Scilly.
