Islanders and visitors to Scilly could benefit if an offshore breakwater is built off Penzance, says MP Andrew George.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was in the town yesterday to announce that the government was funding three quarters of the £200,000 study assessing the options.

Some of the spin-off ideas include a marina and a cruise ship terminal and Mr George says that the structure would protect some of the transport links to Scilly.

Work on the breakwater is unlikely to start for at least five years and it could cost up to £75m.

Andrew says a working party will start immediately and they’ll report back next summer.
