Scilly Has Highest Percentage Of Home Births In Country

hugh town from BuzzaScilly had the highest percentage of home births of any local authority in England and Wales last year.

Data released this month by the Office for National Statistics showed 12.5% of island births were at home. Bridgend in Wales was second on 9.7%, with South Northamptonshire third on 8.46%.

The lowest was Tamworth, with just 0.4% of births taking place outside of a hospital setting.

The Health Service in Scilly has struggled to find a resident midwife since the retirement of Annie Oldham in May, and services are currently being covered from the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust on the mainland.

A Hertfordshire-based candidate was offered the job over the summer but she couldn’t take up the position because of a lack of suitable housing.

Scilly’s Healthwatch have asked the Duchy for help with accommodation and also referred the matter to the Council’s Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
