New Signs Point Way For Visitors

road signsFirst-time visitors should find it easier to navigate St Mary’s lanes next season.

Ten new road signs have been put up to direct people to places of interest including the TIC, the Garrison, the harbour, Porthcressa and Porthmellon beaches, Holgate’s Green, Old Town and Hugh Town.

The £10,000 project aims to point the way between key sites using black metal signposts with white lettering. The posts have been placed at Rosehill, Old Town, Normandy, Pelistry, Telegraph and Watermill.

Both the 2010 Red Kite consultants’ report for the AONB and the 2011 Blue Sail tourism study recommended more direction signs.

The reaction from islanders on social media sites has been generally positive although some locals have questioned why distance in miles or walking time was omitted.
