Last year’s shoebox appeal

The annual Samaritans appeal to fill shoeboxes with gifts for disadvantaged children has broken previous records.

106 shoeboxes have been donated after Mary Leathers used Radio Scilly to urge islanders to provide the present packages for children in Africa and Europe.

The previous record was 96.

Mary says this is “a marvellous achievement.”

She says the donations will enable many children to receive gifts at Christmas, some for the first time.

Sam Grossett arranged the collection at the Five Islands School and she and Mary want to thank all those people who have been involved in the project, especially the pupils of the Five Islands School, and the Steamship Company for conveying the boxes to Penzance.
