A detailed close up of a puffin has won the first prize in this year’s Isles of Scilly Photography Competition, organised by the Islands’ Partnership.

The winning entry, which received 686 votes in the online poll, was taken by Steven Burbidge who lives near Norwich.

Steven is a keen amateur photographer who stayed on Tresco in April, with his wife and two young children.

He says it was early in the year for puffins to be around but he’d always wanted to see them.

“I took a boat trip to St Agnes on the off chance and I got lucky,” he says.

It was the family’s first time in Scilly and Steven says they were “absolutely smitten.”

Amazingly, Steven won his holiday to Tresco in a separate photography competition held in Cornwall last year.

This is the first time the Partnership has held a photography competition and 860 photographs were entered, far more than the organisers expected.

IP Coordinator, Amanda Pender says the overall standard was so high that they’ve decided to send each of the other seven category winners a small token of appreciation – some Veronica Farm Fudge.

Amanda says some of the entries are already being used for marketing purposes. The forthcoming 2015 Isles of Scilly Guide has a ‘10 Reasons To Love Scilly’ section, which features several competition photographs.

And she says they’re going to run another photography competition next year.

Steven receives a two-night break for two at Samson Hill Cottage on Bryher and two return boat tickets for the Scillonian III for his winning entry.

He says, “I hope it will be the first of many return visits to the islands.”
