Search For This Year’s Tourism Superstar Begins

busy hugh street with visitorsDo you do a lot to promote Scilly? If so, you’re being asked to put yourself forward or suggest another islander for a national competition.

Last March, boatman Fraser Hicks helped generate valuable publicity for the islands after he made it through to the final ten in the ‘Tourism Superstar’ awards, organised jointly by VisitEngland and the Daily Mirror newspaper.

Fraser travelled to the capital where he was interviewed on camera for the paper’s website.

Carolyn Garman from the Islands’ Partnership, Scilly’s tourism body, says it’s worth doing because of the publicity it generated. She says the competition attracted over 15,000 online votes and more than 100 separate items of media coverage.

Carolyn says that was great free publicity and helped put the islands on the map. She’s keen to repeat it this year.

Carolyn says the Partnership is looking for locals who work in tourism, with passion and knowledge about the islands.

You’ll need to be able to travel to London in January for filming and, if shortlisted, to the awards ceremony, being held in May.

If more than one islander enters, the IP directors will decide who goes forward.

You’ll need to apply to the Islands’ Partnership by noon next Monday, 24th November.
