Bell Rock Hotel Gets Approval For Self-Catering Flat

Bell Rock HotelSt Mary’s Bell Rock Hotel could be getting new self-catering accommodation.

That follows a decision by councillors at last Thursday’s Planning meeting to allow a staff flat at the rear of the property to be used as a holiday let.

In a letter accompanying the application, owners Chris and June Jones argued that there’s been a considerable change in the holiday market in Scilly with more demand for self-catering accommodation.

The hotel has six staff rooms, half of which haven’t been used in the last three years.

They said it was becoming harder to survive in the full-service hotel sector, and cited Tresco’s closure of the Island Hotel and the ongoing attempt to sell Tregarthen’s as examples.

The Jones’ said problems had been compounded by a poor start to the season, with damage to the railway in Dawlish and problems with Land’s End Airport. And they said resistance to Sunday flying, no winter boat service and the potential closure of the TIC weren’t helping.

“We need to change to go forward,” they said, although they added that there were no plans to convert the rest of the 22-room hotel into flats.

In his report, Senior Manager for Planning Craig Dryden said the conversion was acceptable because it would complement the hotel and the existing business.

Councillors agreed and passed it unanimously.
