Scilly’s Rotarians have launched an appeal for clothes, blankets and toys for Eastern Europe.

In April 2013, Rotary Club members from Romania visited Scilly as guests of the islands’ club.

Rotarian Richard Chiverton arranged for the party of five to tour the new Five Islands School.

During their stay, the project manager for the new school build, Amy Hiron, offered leftover furniture and redundant computer equipment from the old Carn Thomas secondary school site.

Richard says the visitors were delighted with the donation and a lorry containing those items will be dispatched from the mainland before Christmas.

Now Rotary club members want to make the best use of the cargo space and fill the gaps between the furniture with second hand goods donated from Scilly.

Richard accompanied an aid convoy to Kosovo in 2011, which he says was an ‘eye-opener.’

There’s no space for an islander to tag along this time because they’ve arranged for a commercial haulier to transport the load, but he has been offered the chance to visit Romania in the spring.

The Steamship Company has agreed to transfer the donated goods to the mainland and it’s likely that the consignment will leave Scilly by the end of next week.

If you have something to donate, please call Richard on 422 002 or contact any Rotarian.
