Charity Fundraising Goes To Steamship Employee’s Head!

Debbie before and after the challenge

Debbie before and after the challenge

A Steamship Company worker says she’s grateful for islanders’ support after she achieved three-and-a-half times her fundraising target to have her hair shaved off for charity.

If you book freight for transport you’ve probably spoken with Debbie Hunt, who looks after the ship’s manifest.

On Monday, Debbie had her long blonde hair cut off in front of colleagues at the company’s Penzance travel centre. She’s set to raise £1,750 in sponsorship for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Debbie wanted to help that charity because she lost her mum to dementia in July, and a friend’s mother died from the illness last year.

And she chose the challenge of having her hair cut off because she says she’s not the sort of person to jump out of aeroplanes and is not built for running marathons.

Debbie is known for her nice hair and she felt that cutting it off was the “ultimate sacrifice.”

She’s never worn her hair so short and says it is cold, so she’s taken to wearing lots of hats.

During last week’s fog delays Debbie says she was able to nag islanders she knows into supporting her successful appeal as they used the boat to return home.
