Far East Technology Experts Could Deliver Smart Grid To Scilly

hugh town from BuzzaThe Council could partner with companies from the Far East on its ambitious ‘Smart Island’ project.

A report being presented by Senior Manager Diana Mompoloki to members of the Planning Committee on Thursday reveals that the authority has already had meetings with delegations from Japan and Taiwan about the use of so-called ‘Smart Grid’ technology.

That’s a way of controlling the electricity supply, and the equipment connected to it, to reduce energy consumption.

It’s those discussions which led to the Council’s EU-wide announcement that it was looking for a partner to help increase the amount of renewable energy generation in Scilly.

They also aim to get two in five islanders driving electric cars.

A tie up with a Far Eastern company could have long-term advantages for the islands’ children.

Diana’s report says the project will include cultural exchanges and language lessons for schoolchildren as well as help with science and engineering courses.

It’s hoped that money from the European Regional Development Fund can enable the project to go ahead.
