BT has started taking bookings for superfast broadband internet access on the islands.

This follows the innovative project to divert an existing fibre optic cable to Scilly this summer, as part of the Superfast Cornwall programme.

Residents on St Mary’s are being offering upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps, a significant leap from the current average which is under 0.5 Mbps.

That will greatly increase reliably of Skype video calls, uploading pictures to Facebook or sending large files.

The download speed is being predicted as up to 78 Mbps – better than the current maximum of 4 Mbps achievable in the town, although it is marginally faster upcountry on St Mary’s, near the telephone exchange.

But speed comes at a cost. BT is offering the faster package at £26 a month with a £17 a month line rental. Their current standard broadband package will cost £7.50 a month, plus the line rental fee.

BT is the only internet provider we can find taking bookings for the upgrade currently. The faster internet is set go live in the last week of November.

BT’s Jason Mann says they are currently finalising arrangements and carrying out final testing to make sure all the systems are operating as planned.
