If you’re looking for a new social activity for the long winter nights, St Mary’s Short Mat Bowls Club would like you to consider joining their group.

Last month their open evening encouraged five new participants including two teenagers to sign up.

Secretary Dave Townend says there’s a perception that bowls is just for older people but he is keen to dispel that perception.

Younger members are particularly welcome, he says, and their fifteen members are more interested in the social, rather than the sporting, side of the game.

He says no one takes the game too seriously and members have a good time.

Dave says successful short mat bowling takes some practice and skill.

A block of wood is placed hallway down the mat, which means you can’t bowl straight down. And the bowls have a ‘bias’ or a weighted side, which means they’ll tend to go in one direction or the other.

The sessions are held on Thursdays at 7pm to 10pm in the Church Hall and if you go along to one and decide you like it, there’s an annual membership fee of £40, which can be paid in two installments.

If you have guests who’d like an evening out, visitors can play for £3 a session.
