Italian Island Compares Airfares To Scilly

skybus-planes-at-airportThe ‘controversy’ over the price of reaching an island destination and the role of subsidies has been hitting the headlines again.

But this isn’t Scilly. It’s the small island of Elba, off the coast of Tuscany in Italy.

The regional newspaper, Tirreno Elba News, has been discussing the high costs of getting to the island by their local carrier ‘Silver Air.’

But Roberto Duglio, the chief operating officer of their airport, has quoted the cost of flights to Scilly to back up his belief that people travelling to Elba are actually getting a good deal.

Mr Duglio says the three destinations served; Pisa, Florence and Milan, at 20, 30 and 60 minutes flying time are similar to flights to Scilly from Land’s End, Newquay and Exeter.

But at 35, 43 and 70 euros for a single, respectively, they’re significantly cheaper. Aircraft similar to Twin Otters are used on the routes.

However, it seems that the Steamship Company fares compare favourably with the cost of many flights to smaller islands around the world.

We’ve compared routes that cover a similar distance and time spent flying on the trip between Newquay and Scilly.

This week a 7-day return from that Cornish airport to Scilly is around £190, but Cape Air in the USA charge £200 for a return on the 70-mile trip from Boston to Martha’s Vineyard.

Alderney to Southampton, a 45-minute flight on Aurigny is now £254 return and FlyBe’s similar length trip from Inverness to Kirkwall on Orkney is £260.
