Islands Can Form Own Royal British Legion Branch

armed forces day 2014_2Scilly is ready to form the islands’ own Royal British Legion branch.

Over twenty islanders have expressed an interest in being part of a new group after Smudge Smith’s recent appeal.

Fourteen people attended their inaugural meeting at the Scillonian Club three weeks ago and there were ten apologies offered. That means there are enough people to form a committee.

Smudge will act as Chairman but he tells Radio Scilly he’ll only stand for one year as he’s 80 in 2015 and doesn’t want to take on the role indefinitely.

Richard Larn was chosen as Vice-Chair, David Duncan as Treasurer and Jenny Bagnall will serve as Secretary. Dave Hawkins and Tim Stone will serve as committee members.

Smudge says he hopes that the group can be up and running by Christmas. Islanders are now just waiting for the officials on the mainland to come over and approve the plans, but that’s been delayed due to illness amongst key personnel.
