Author Putting Final Touches To New Guide To Scilly’s Plants

agnes lane flowers 2The author of the definitive guide to Scilly’s wildlife and landscape is planning another major work.

Rosemary Parslow’s 2007 guide stretched to 400 pages. Now she’s finalising a new book of a similar size that will concentrate on our plants and ferns.

Rosemary says it will include every species recorded in Scilly, including non-native invaders, with a description of how they’re spreading.

The book contains around 60,000 plant records and facts sent in from 400 island residents and visitors.

After her previous book was published, Rosemary realised how final the printing process can be. Two rare butterflies were recorded just as she was going to print in 2007 but the publishers wouldn’t let her make any last-minute changes.

She says there’s a huge amount of interest our unique plants. Rosemary arranges tours for specialist holiday companies as well as independent travellers and botanists who want to see the islands’ flowers and fauna.

She hasn’t finalised the name of the book yet, which will be published next year.
