The Islands’ Aikido club meets tonight and in its second year of operation there are now twelve islanders on the books.

St Mary’s resident Chris Hall acts as sensei, a Japanese word used to describe teachers who have mastered their art.

Chris says there’s space for more locals to attend and learn the non-violent martial art, which is as much about the mind as it is about the body and physical strength.

There are a dozen residents who attend regularly and Chris says more can be accommodated even though their 2014-15 sessions have started.

Chris says he hopes the group will grow and encourage visiting tutors to pass on skills.

The sessions are held on Tuesday evenings at the Sports Hall and Chris hopes that they can continue with their Friday meetings, which are practise rather than teaching sessions.
