Chairman Expresses ‘Extreme Dissatisfaction’ Over Council Debt Recovery

town hall 4The Council Chairman has criticised efforts to recover debts owed to the authority.

In the minutes to discussions held behind closed doors at the last Policy and Resources Committee in July, Cllr Amanda Martin asked for her “extreme dissatisfaction” to be noted with regard to the work undertaken previously in dealing with this issue, and felt that the Council had been “badly-served.”

The July minutes reveal that councillors approved the write-off of a further £13,000 of money owed to the authority because it was considered irrecoverable.

The last two years has seen an increase in the number of islanders being summonsed to appear before magistrates for failure to pay council tax and business rates and mainland bailiffs have been brought in to recover debts.
