German Travel Professionals Assess Scilly’s Offering

hugh town from BuzzaA party of six travel agents from Munich have spent the weekend assessing Scilly as a quality destination to recommend to their clients.

And they liked what they saw.

For the last three years, Niall MacDougall has been promoting Scilly as part of, the premium German-language Cornish tourism website.

Niall arranged the trip because around a third of overseas visitors to Cornwall come from Germany and Niall believes if they know about Scilly, they’ll make the additional crossing.

He says newspaper articles on Scilly are great, but the travel industry has “muscle and marketing power” and getting the professionals to see and experience Scilly is the best way to put the islands on travel itineraries.

He adds that none of the travel consultants were aware of Scilly before the visit he arranged.

The party went on a seal safari, visited Bryher and stayed on Tresco, where Mike Nelhams showed them around the Abbey Gardens.

The trip was supported by Visit England, Tresco Estate, Skybus and Flybe, and Niall says the professionals were impressed.

He says they want to advertise Scilly alongside other ‘bucket list’ destinations like Burma, Marrakesh and exclusive, high-end US resorts like the Hamptons.

But the professionals had some grumbles which Niall feels could be fixed relatively easily.

There was a strong view expressed that there needs to be more streamlined and integrated travel between the mainland and Scilly to ensure guests traveling a long way have the best experience.

That could include making luggage transfer easier and through ticketing on airlines.

Niall believes islanders should press the mainland operators to introduce joined-up timetables, especially at international gateways like Exeter, so we can all benefit from the additional business from Germany and Austria.
