Churchgoers on Tresco will be getting used to worshipping in new surroundings this weekend.

The congregation is moving to the Community Centre as work begins to refurbish St Nicholas Church. It’s being closed to the public and won’t reopen until the end of February.

The repairs are being partly funded by a £106,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery fund and include the roof being reslated and damp in the walls treated.

A new public address system is also being installed.

Assistant Chaplain, the Reverend Penny Prince, says it’s a big challenge to move everything to the Community Centre, which she and Eve Cooper will be doing this weekend.

And she says it will probably take some time for the congregation to settle into their new location.

It’ll mean some changes to the way they perform the service but Penny adds that the church is not really about the building they’re in, but the people who come along to worship.

Canon Paul Miller says they’re hoping to have a special service in the spring on Tresco to celebrate the restoration of the church to which all the other islands will be invited.
