Careers Event Taking Place At School Tomorrow

Careers Convention 2011_17The annual careers event is taking place at the Five Islands School tomorrow, focusing on year 10 and 11 students in the afternoon.

Along with their parents, they’ll get a chance to talk to further education staff over from the mainland and find out about the courses available.

For pupils who don’t want to leave the islands for college, Scilly’s biggest private employers, the Steamship Company and Tresco Estate, will attend and outline the sort of roles they recruit into.

The NHS will be represented along with the islands’ dental practice and Devon and Cornwall Police. There’ll also be employees of therapist and beauty businesses too.

The South West Manufacturing Advice Service will help attendees with options for self-employment and starting their own businesses.

Organiser Penny Rogers says she’s tried to assemble a “wide variety of professions and interesting people” and it is not too late to come forward if you’d like to represent your chosen field.

Penny says adults are also welcome to attend the event in the school hall between 6.30pm and 8pm.

Last year there was a move to offer information for adults considering further education, training or looking for new career opportunities here or in Cornwall.

Penny says it hasn’t proved a big part of the day yet but she says the offer of advice is still there for those adults who want it.
