Tresco Tack Could Become Part Of Sailing World Record

round the island 2013Scilly Sailors will be taking part in an international fundraiser on Sunday and if enough people turn out, they could help set a world record.

The Scillonian Sailing Club is holding their closing race of the sailing season, the Tresco Tack, and they’ll be joining 746 clubs who’ll have members out on the water in 65 countries to raise cash and awareness for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.

Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson died tragically in a training accident in San Francisco Bay while preparing for the America’s Cup competition in 2013.

As part of the international ‘Bart’s Bash’ every club will need to sail for over 1km and for at least 15 minutes. And every event with over 25 boats taking part will go towards an attempt to gain a Guinness record for the largest sailing race across multiple venues.

All islanders taking part on Sunday will be asked to pay £5 towards the charity, which aims to inspire the next generation through sailing and work with the RYA to coach young sailors.

There’s a meet and brief at the sailing club at 10.15am before the 11am start.
