Church Youth Group Continues After Funding Secured

A youth group that lets youngsters discuss life issues away from adults will continue. Grant money from the Methodist Church means that the monthly sessions for 12 to 14-year-olds can continue.

Recent funding has enabled former resident Jenny Scott, who is better known to locals as illustrator Jenny Nightingale, to come over from Devon each month.

On Monday a meeting was held between the islands’ churches to agree the continuation of the service.

Beryl Read from the Methodist Church says the sessions will represent all Christian churches on the islands and while there’s an underlying religious theme, the meetings won’t be preaching in nature.

It’s about giving the youngsters the tools they need to cope with life, says Beryl.

And while the meetings are strictly monitored, they allow free discussion away from adult interference.

Beryl is pleased that the group can go on because there are fewer things for youngsters to do in Scilly.

They’ll have the chance to link up with similar youth groups on the mainland, meaning they can make friends there before they leave for college or training at 16.

Beryl says two islanders have expressed an interest in hosting the sessions and details of the dates will be announced soon.
