Scilly Has Most Successful Year For Cruise Ship Visits

minerva cruise ship and harbourThe islands have had their most successful year for cruise ships visits.

Since the start of April, 37 vessels have called into Scilly and two more boats are due here on the 14th and the 16th of this month, before the islands’ cruise ship season ends.

St Mary’s Harbourmaster Dale Clark says there’s been a “dramatic” increase in the number of cruise passengers coming ashore in Scilly, particularly on St Mary’s.

The previous record-breaking year was 2012 when 7,948 people visited but already this year, they’ve passed 10,000 passengers.

Dale says it’s a fantastic effort from everybody involved.

Although there have been years when more vessels were scheduled to visit, ships have sometimes had to pull out due to the weather.

Dale says positive feedback from crew and passengers encourages cruise companies to return to Scilly or add additional visiting dates. That means everybody putting in the extra effort to make sure they enjoy their visit, he says.

This week, Dale is traveling to Exeter to meet with representatives from the cruise ship sector and Destination South West, who aim to encourage more cruise ship visits across the region.

Dale says Scilly could accept even more visiting vessels in the future and it’s important to let the companies know we’re here and open for business.
