Scilly Fruit Grower Offering Use Of Apple Press

community orchard trenowethApple and pear growers on St Mary’s are being offered the use of a new press so they can make juice from their autumn crop.

Last year Ang Jenkins received a £20,500 grant from the Local Action Group to transform an old glasshouse at Carn Friars Farm into a base for an expanded fruit growing operation.

Ang says the new equipment is now installed and ready to produce juice. And says she’s got plenty of capacity with the new kit to give other growers the opportunity to use it.

There’s been a move towards more islands-based fruit production because it’s sustainable and means a wider range of varieties will be available here.

Ang has picked some of the distinctly local, early ripening ‘Scilly Pearl’ apples. They’re not that good as a commercial apple, she says, because they only last a few days, so she’ll freeze them and press them later.

If you’d like to use the press you can call Ang on 422321.
