An 11-year old girl from Berkshire has won a national writing competition, inspired by her visits to Scilly.

Caitlin Wilkins, who has been visiting since she was a baby, came joint-first in the 8 to 10-year-olds class of the Wicked Young Writers’ Award challenge.

Her work ‘The Lost Coin’ beat 5,200 other entries in the contest.

Caitlin wrote about the wreck of the HMS Association in February, after staying at Prospect House Flats.

When she was here, she learned about the naval disaster on St Mary’s.

Caitlin was awarded her prize by Bryher regular, author Michael Morpurgo. She won book tokens and books for her school.

Her mum Jo says there’s “no place in the world like Scilly.”
