St Mary’s Man To Take Bite Of Big Apple Marathon

A St Mary’s man is in training for his second marathon of the year.

After raising £1,000 for the Children’s Hospice South West in the London event this spring, Martin Douglas says he’s now ready to take on the New York race.

Martin believes that the Big Apple course is hillier, because the best time is a few minutes behind London.

Although he’s an experience marathon runner, Martin says he’s keen to make sure he paces himself properly, which can be a challenge when a large and supportive crowd spurs you on at the start.

The New York marathon is a larger with 50,000 runners – 14,000 more than London. Martin thinks that could be because the streets are wider and there’s no entry ballot. You can arrange your place as part of a package holiday, which is what he’s doing it.

Martin says he’d like to take part in the London marathon again next year but if he can’t get a place, then Paris is an option.

He’s taking part with his brother-in-law James Stedeford. They’ll be supported by family members who will travel to New York with them.

Sponsorship forms are now available in his shop at The Bank.
