Kier Group Appointed For St Mary’s Quay Work

kier minibusThe Kier Group has been appointed to carry out the construction work on St Mary’s Quay. It’s their third major project on the islands in the last four years.

Yesterday, Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin announced a £7.8m funding package that will allow the quay to be extended and widened, along with provision of new freight storage facilities and improved access for passengers.

There’ll also be some dredging and highways work in Penzance as part of the £12.8m scheme.

Cornwall Council is project managing the work and their Head of Transportation, Nigel Blackler, confirmed that Kier had been appointed and were already carrying out survey work on St Mary’s.

He was keen that they hit the ground running as soon as the funding was announced.

Kier has worked on several large projects in Scilly. They were the lead contractor for the new £14m Five Island School and Sports Hall at Carn Gwaval, which were handed over to the Council in 2011. They also build the new TIC, register office and library as part of the £4m Porthcressa regeneration scheme.
