Cricket: St Martin’s v St Mary’s

st martins cricket pitch sign 2Report by Colin Daly

After removing some chairs and tables left on the pitch after the fete the day before, a T20 match between St. Martin’s and St. Mary’s got underway on St. Martin’s about six on Thursday 7th Aug.

The weather was fair but there were some interesting high clouds about.  St. Martin’s batted first; J. Smith top scored with 25 and there were a number of other useful scores to make a grand total of106 for 7.

St. Mary’s went for the score at a moderate but adequate run rate but lost some wickets. Tony Gilbert top scored with 45. Two St. Mary’s batsmen were caught behind after the slightest of snicks, not waiting for the umpire but sportingly walked off as they knew they were out. They were admonished for this by their captain later but took no notice.

The required runs were scored with an over or two to spare and all retired to the Sevenstones for their usual fine hospitality.

I think you will find that Colin had given a lbw decision in which the batsman didn’t agree along with the square leg umpire and also at martins wicket keeper.. the square leg umpire ask the bowler if he was not embarrassed by decision that Colin had given in which he replied yes. I’m all for fair sportsman ship but when we have a umpire who is very byest to st martins questions will always arise.
