Sun Shines For St Martin’s Fete

st martins fete 2011The arrival of the Transatlantic rowers might have reduced St Martin’s fete attendance but organisers are pleased with the overall turnout.

The annual event raises cash to fund the island’s new hall and attendees will have noticed some changes this year.

A raft of competition prizes was put up by the island’s new Karma hotel.

But one perennial attraction wasn’t available. Committee member Terry Davis says the water slide down to Higher Town Bay wasn’t thought safe because the sand dunes were depleted in the Valentine’s Day storm.

They’ll build up again over time, but in the meantime fire-fighters hosted a Fireman Sam event, using hoses to dislodge youngsters hats instead.

For locals and visitors, there were machines for those who wanted to replicate an Atlantic row.

The day also included the St Martin’s favourites of the human fruit machine and snail racing. There was also a treasure hunt with ‘real’ treasure bought from Men-a-vaur on St Mary’s.
