Scilly’s MP says he expects the UK Independence Party to be up in the polls in the next election.

Liberal Democrat Andrew George was responding to an islander’s question over the popularity of the party, which topped the vote in the European elections in Scilly.

At his recent St Mary’s public meeting, Mr George pointed out that UKIP came first in most areas.

He doesn’t agree with politicians who dismiss their support as a protest vote in a low turn out and he doubts whether the anti-European party has reached their “watershed” of support.

But he also doubts that they’ll return an MP.

Andrew says the Lib Dems have got their messaging wrong and some people misinterpret their pro-European stance as ‘anti British’ which he says isn’t correct.
