Redwing Wins Round-The-Island Race

round the island race 2013 245 boats entered Sunday’s Round-the-Island Race, the biggest event in Scilly’s sailing calendar.

Keith and Ned Buchanan won the race. They completed the St Mary’s circuit and cut across to St Agnes in their Redwing, Ballerina, in 1 hour 25 minutes.

Keith says he was “quite determined” to claw back the title from 2013 winner Joe Sibley, who came second, less than one minute behind.

There was a decent force 3 or 4 breeze for the race and heading into a big sea meant it was hard work at times.

Keith says the number of entrants was up this year. Last year the weather meant they had to move the race date by a fortnight and that meant some regulars couldn’t take part.

There was a “severe cull” in the number of trophies awarded this year and, while this meant the prize giving was quicker, Keith says some club members are concerned that the too many cups have been cut.

He thinks more will be added back last year.

An ‘Achievement’ award was given to Mark Hicks and Tom Jackman for building a boat, Destroyer, within one week and completing the circuit in three and a half hours.

Keith described the small catamaran as ‘funky looking’ and praised the pair for completing the race.

Keith and Ned took trophies for both the 1st Traditional Boat and 1st on Handicap in 1 hour 17 minutes.

2nd on Handicap went to Joe and Clive Sibley in 1 hour 18 minutes and 3rd went to Robin Mawer and Peter Smith in 1 hour 22 minutes

The 1st Lady Helm Cup was given to Carol Shave for her time of 1 hour 24 minutes and Sam Stephan took the first junior helm at 1 hour 26 minutes.
