New Hardened Runways Open At Land’s End Airport

lands end terminalLand’s End Airport re-opens for flights today and the Chief Executive of the Steamship Company, Rob Goldsmith, says he’s “delighted.”

The Skybus-owned facility closed on July the 4th so Lagan Construction could hard surface the grass runways.

Engineers did face some challenges during the £2.6 million project. The base layer that was going to be surfaced failed to harden satisfactorily and soil samples had to be sent for analysis to help the experts find a solution.

The new tarmac runway should bring an end to the disruption faced by passengers over the last two winters.

Rob says the company’s investment in upgrading the runways and drainage is designed to strengthen the air link to the islands and avoid a repeat of the prolonged waterlogging issues caused by the severe weather.

He says the company is also upgrading the lighting and approach aids. Rob says with the ongoing investment at St Mary’s, this will make the route even more robust.
