In Pictures: New War Memorial Dedicated

A new war memorial was unveiled on St Mary’s this morning. It’s the culmination of several years of work by the islands’ Royal British Legion Chairman, Smudge Smith, and will hopefully become a focal point for those members of the community who can no longer make the journey to the memorial in Old Town.

There’s more information about the people listed on the memorial at
http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Cornwall/ScillyIslesStMary.html where you can start to get an idea of the story that’s behind each name. For instance, in what must have been an unbearable tragedy for their family, two of the three Dorrien-Smith brothers who died in World War II were killed on the same day in 1940. There’s also details of two of the civilian casualties, Sylvia Jenkins and Dorothy Paice, who I understand were tragically killed when a bomb was dropped near where the Dairy stands now. You can also see that a number of Islanders died whilst serving with Commonwealth forces presumably having emigrated before the war.
