Big Success For Weekend Golf Festival

Organisers of last weekend’s Festival of Golf at St Mary’s Golf Club say it’s been a huge success.

The event saw three days of competition, designed to raise money for the club and its chosen charity, the Adam Mallon Fund.

Club Captain Mark Twynham says they also wanted to encourage more people to visit the course and potentially recruit new members, particularly younger residents.

On Saturday, members arranged a golf taster session for schoolchildren followed by some food in the clubhouse.

Mark says a total of 84 players took part in the three tournaments, with James Francis, Tony Gilbert, Mark Hicks and Russ Hutchins winning Friday’s Texas Scramble and James winning again in the Open Championship on Saturday.

John Bird won the booby prize for the worst round.

On Sunday, the AM/AM Richard Chiverton Cup went to Adam Blackwell, Chris Evans, Eddie Williams and Andy Guy.

Around £2,000 was raised in total, including a £500 donation from the Scilly Lottery.

A “sell-out” barbecue on Sunday night with music from All Squared Up, also added to the total, with clubhouse Chef Ramsey donating the proceeds from the food.

Mark says that total was “fantastic” and hopes the event can be held again next year, particularly as the trophies are now in place.

He says the mainland visitors who took part had a great time and he feels it’s “put the club on the map.”
