‘No Scillonians Left In Scilly Without The Duchy’ Says MP

andrew george 2014Scilly’s MP says the islands shouldn’t wish away the Duchy and overall, they’re a force for good here.

Andrew George made his views clear at a public meeting held at the Old Wesleyan Chapel on Friday.

Some locals have favoured the removal of the special status of Prince Charles’ estate and have voiced their support for switching their Duchy leases to a housing association.

But Mr George says the Duchy’s property and land controls have helped preserve the islands’ way of life.

Andrew says opening freehold on all the islands decades ago would have meant no Scillonians being left here now.

He says he’s not an advocate for the Duchy and has often been very critical, but he believes that “overall they’re a good thing for the islands” and it’s better to have them here, than not.
