Visitors Snap Up Work By Scilly’s Amateur Artists

art show 2014A steady stream of visitors viewed the work of St Mary’s artists at the Masonic Hall yesterday.

Fourteen islanders are Art Group members and around half that number regularly attend their weekly on-location painting sessions in the summer.

Each July the amateur artists display their work and some of them offer their paintings for sale.

Organiser Veronica Ellis says attendees, especially visitors, were impressed and surprised at the size and diversity of the show.

As an artist, Veronica says it is flattering when people stop and take time to admire the art.

Kim Lahy was visiting the exhibition on holiday from Phoenix in Arizona. She was impressed by the quality of the artwork, which she described as “fabulous” and said she wished she had more baggage allowance to take items back to the US.

Some of the artists approach the annual exhibition commercially and know what sells, says Veronica. With visitors, that’s usually an iconic view of Scilly that they can take back home to remember their trip.

If you’d like to develop your sketching or painting skills with the support of fellow amateur artists, Veronica says you’re welcome to turn up at one of the group’s summertime sessions.

They usually run on Tuesday afternoons with artists meeting outside the Town Hall.
