Historic Event As Scilly Sees First Gay Wedding

Scilly has hosted the islands’ first-ever gay wedding.

The two women, 44-year-old Heidi Studart and 40-year-old Helen Spacey from Berkshire made Scilly history when they tied the knot in front of fourteen guests at Tregarthen’s Hotel last Saturday afternoon.

Superintendent Registrar Alison Gardner and Registrar Sarah Handy officiated as they both wanted to mark this significant new development.

The happy couple first came to Scilly last year, where Heidi proposed to Helen on St Agnes. They both immediately fell in love with the islands and booked their wedding at the hotel last July.

There was lots of local input into the wedding, with the couple carrying floral bouquets by an islands’ florist and a wedding cake made in Scilly.

Alison says there are more same-sex weddings on the cards for Scilly with several bookings and enquiries, and she feels the islands are a smart choice for all couples.

Register Office staff are able to respond to requests even at very short notice.

Only this weekend, Alison received a call saying the couple’s photographer had to leave urgently for the mainland. She took the call at home and was able to bring the service forward at the couple’s request, to ensure everything went smoothly.
