Author Completes Scilly-Set Trilogy With New Romantic Novel

Linda MacDonald has just published ‘The Alone Alternative,’ the third book in her trilogy about lead characters Marianne and Edward, who have a second chance of love in middle age.

The new release is set in 2012, eight years after the previous novel, when the two main characters, unbeknown to each other, have lost their partners.

The new book also ties sustainability issues into the Scilly-centred storyline, something that Linda says fascinates her about the islands.

Unusually, all of the books include the use of emails between the lead characters, as a tool to develop the story and present dialogue. Linda has also embraced social media, such as Twitter, to show conversation between the characters.

She says she didn’t want the books to be trivial, romantic stories. As they evolved, she has tried to bring in deeper aspects of psychology and environmental issues.

And she says the islands are “incredibly important” to her, after discovering Scilly “quite late in life.”

She’s been visiting St Agnes for the past ten years and is fascinated by the Troy Town maze, which featured in one of her books.

Linda says the islands have influenced her and that’s been reflected is her writing. She’s included references to real places, like the Ruin on Tresco, and actual people including St Agnes islanders, Pam and Julian Beresford-Smith.

Linda is set to visit St Agnes in August and there are no plans for book signing yet. She has been giving talks about her writing at mainland libraries and says she’d be happy to do something similar here if invited.

The Alone Alternative can be ordered from the islands’ booksellers.
