Lifeboat Called After False Alert Triggered

lifeboat name signSt Mary’s lifeboat was launched yesterday afternoon after a false safety alert, thought to have been triggered by UK Border Agency equipment.

Their cutter, HMC Protector, had been in Scilly’s waters visiting the French cruise ship Club Med 2. Scilly was her first port-of-call in UK waters.

It seems that an electronic warning was accidentally activated on lifejackets used on the Border Agency RIB.

The clothing is equipped with AIS SART technology that launches an emergency message if manually activated. Sometimes the alert is sent if similar jackets come into contact with water.

Crew aboard the River Trader and the yacht Defiant picked up what appeared to be a distress signal. They called Falmouth Coastguard who alerted the RNLI.

The Meridian and Lyonesse Lady also assisted in an initial search of the area north west of the Creeb.

The lifeboat was stood down when it became clear that this was a false alert.
