Cricket: St Martin’s v. St Agnes Mixed Teams

cricket playersReport by Colin Daly

It was originally intended that the match on St. Martin’s this Sunday (6th) should be between the home team and St. Agnes’. Both teams were short of numbers and had invited some Tresco players to make up their eleven.

So it was thought that with the “Hound” cup match between St. Mary’s and a combined off-island team coming up next Sunday that the game could be used as a sort of trial for the off-islanders. Accordingly two mixed teams were made up and played a 25 over match in glorious weather.

Jonathon Smith’s eleven won the toss and decided to bat first. James Morton was unusually picked to open the batting and showed himself capable of a steady innings of 39 rather than the slog needed lower in the order. Some steady innings followed until the deadly accuracy of Andrew Lawson bowled out two and restricted the total to127.

Sam Hicks team set out on the run chase and kept up with the run rate but it was getting close, until a previously apparently nervous player hit two sixes and settled the matter. This gave players a good chance to show the selection committee what they could do and this was much discussed at the Sevenstones over their welcome refreshment.
