Charity Could Provide Home Helps In Scilly

town hall windows signThe Council is in talks with a major UK charity to provide home care assistants on the islands.

The Senior Manager for Community Services, Aisling Hick, says Age UK are already providing home carers in Cornwall and they’re looking to extend the scheme to Scilly.

The charity employ the workers to provide services such as ironing, washing and shopping for older residents.

Aisling told members of last week’s Community Services meeting that local authorities are no longer expected to provide home helps.

But she added there’s a “definite gap in the market” to help elderly residents to continue living independently in their own homes.

She also warned that it wouldn’t be easy to fill these roles in Scilly.

The Council has tried it before, says Aisling, but pay is not as competitive as in the tourism sector.
