Tresco and Bryher’s May Queen has been crowned and there was an extra special surprise for 10-year-old Chessen Pender-Fraser.

Her father Andy travelled back to the islands for the occasion from Singapore, where he runs a maritime business.

Chessen says it made the day even more special.

The annual tradition, including maypole dancing, was watched by both islanders and visitors.

The venue alternates between Bryher and Tresco and Wednesday’s celebration was held in the garden at South Hill on Bryher. Traditionally, the oldest pupil is picked for the role of May Queen.

Chessen said her teachers were worried that they’d get it wrong on the day, because they hadn’t had many practise runs.

But in the end everything went fine, she says, and it’s an experience that she’ll never forget.

Grandmother Sue, who also served as May Queen on Tresco when she attended school there, crowned Chessen.
