Methodist Church Receiving Guest Speaker This Sunday

A guest speaker from the other side of the World will address St Mary’s Methodist Church on Sunday.

Paul Watson will compare Scilly with his home in rural New Zealand.

Paul, who has family on St Mary’s, runs the Curio Bay Christian Fellowship with a congregation of just 20. His village at the bottom of the South Island has only five families.

Paul lives in the second most southerly house in New Zealand and says there’s potential for friendship links between the two areas because of our isolation. And he says he feels at home in Scilly because the islands share similarities with his home, such as the beautiful coastline and beaches.

Paul says he’s keen to find out more about Scilly while he’s here. He finds the contrast with the mainland, such as our low crime and lack of traffic, fascinating.

And he’s used to talking to churchgoers away from home, having been on missions to Uganda, Kenya and Fiji.

This weekend islanders will hear Paul’s thoughts on why Europeans settlers went to such an isolated country as New Zealand to make their new homes.
